Seeing that so many are starting/going to college soon I’ve decided to collect some tips I have gathered over the last 3 years of being an university student myself.
*MAKE (AT LEAST ONE) FRIEND(S)/ACQUAINTANCE(S) IN EACH CLASS. yay friends who’ll suffer with you! Most importantly if you miss one class you can ask them what you’ve missed, about homework and for their notes.
*USE THE PROFESSORS/TA OFFICE HOURS. Almost no one uses them throughout the semester but then two weeks before the finals everyone will go! Sometimes if you know how to ask the TAs might eve give you the answers to one of your assignment problems :’)..sometimes they sit there with you until you get the right answer too :)
*USE A BACKPACK. First of all, you can fit a lot of stuff inside. Second of all, if you carry it around for a while, a backpack will be easier on your shoulders and back.
*PACK A FEW SPARE PENS. If you forget your pencil case this will save you. So try to stuff some pens somewhere in (preferably all of) your bag(s).
*FIRST HOMEWORK? EASY. SECOND? WTF IS HAPPENING. According to my experience the first 1-3 weeks and the first assignment of a class are always easy but then after that, the level of difficulty suddenly increases. Don’t think you can slack off just because it’s seems easy the first few weeks, it’s going to backfire and at some point you might not be able to follow the class anymore.
- presentations
- essays (have yet to write one of these but start early?)
- weekly assignments
- group assignments due in 2-3 week (there might be a lot of communication problems. Try to start on these and get your group to meet up as early as possible)
- voluntary homework ( DO THEM !!!! you don’t have to do all but they’ll surely help you when you’re revising for finals)
*START REVISING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. 4 weeks before your finals are not enough if you have more than 3 different classes and haven’t even studied or prepared at all yet.
*LESS IS MORE? You can have a big folder to put all your notes for your different classes in but it’ll be way too heavy with all the papers collecting over the semester. So consider just bringing one block to uni and organising your stuff at home. Or just go for digital notes.
*USE GOOGLE DRIVE FOR GROUP WORKS. It’s so useful and can make your life easier. You can write documents, excel files, make slides, create shareable folders and upload files in there. Every group member can view, edit the same document and even add comments on the side for other group members to see. There’s a chat window too! You shouldn’t edit the same part of a document at the same time though.
*USE CLOUD SERVICES. You can save space on your device and can access them from everywhere. Most of my friends send pictures of their notes to my phone and I found it neater to re-upload them online into folders than having a mess of a photo gallery. You can make it available for offline in the mobile app as well!
*CONSIDER GETTING A TABLET. You don’t really need a laptop 90% of the time. Your college/university probably has computer rooms for you to use as well. Most professors use slides these days, so if you got a tablet you could annotate them! You can use your phone but it might be too small.
THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO CARRY IN YOUR BAG:
- snacks & water (You never know how long you might stay at the college/uni after the lectures.)
- small jacket (It might get really chilly)
- a charger
- an umbrella
- medicine, painkillers, plaster
- tissues, lip balm, hand cream etc
That’s all I can think of right now. It’s a mess but hope you found these tips useful!
